The Trent End of the City Ground

Sarina Wiegman’s back-to-back European champions will play at the City Ground in March – the first time an England women’s team have appeared on Trentside in 32 years.

The Lionesses will take on Iceland in a World Cup qualifier at the home of Nottingham Forest on March 7, the FA announced.

England defeated Spain in a tense penalty shootout in Switzerland back in the summer, running out 3-1 shootout winners to secure their second straight European title.

Wiegman’s squad have since been on a good run of form, defeating China 8-0, and recording a 2-0 win at St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton over Ghana.

Before that, England defeated Australia in an international friendly at Pride Park in Derby.

The Lionesses currently sit at fourth in the FIFA women’s world rankings, behind Spain, the US and Germany respectively, however the double European champions are looking to finally conquer the world stage at Brazil 2027, after a runners-up place in 2023 to familiar foes Spain.

An England women’s side last played in Nottingham in March 1994, when the City Ground hosted an 6-0 win over Belgium in a Euros qualifier.
