Nottingham is playing its part in making “the most depressing day of the year” that little bit brighter.
The third January of the year, coined as Blue Monday, is known to be a time where people are often in their post-holiday slump, have tight finances, and are perhaps failing their new Year’s resolutions.
Former Cardiff University health psychologist Cliff Arnall gave the date the infamous name, which falls on the 19th January this year, in 2005 as part of a public relations campaign for Sky Travel Shop, a television channel devoted to programmes about travelling.

In recent years however, this day has been used to encourage conversations around mental health and to get people out and about.
Nottingham’s Victoria Centre is putting a focus on mental health year-round with Nottinghamshire Mind being their Charity of the Year for 2026.
Nicola Rea, chief executive officer at Nottinghamshire Mind, said: “Partnerships like this play a crucial role in helping us raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigma and ensure more people across Nottinghamshire can access the support they need, when they need it.”
Prezzo Italian is one of the many businesses bringing offers on Blue Monday, introducing a special deal where you can enjoy a selection of pasta and pizza dishes for just 99p, to help bring the joy of Italian dining to customers at cheap prices.
Christina Manolache and Tsvetelina Tencheva, Prezzo Italian employees, believe that it is important to make food accessible, especially at a time of the year where money may be tight.
Christina said: “Despite the financial hardships many face at this time of the year, we want to ensure the community can still enjoy a warm meal and that they feel welcome.
“Every pound matters.”
Tsvetelina said: “People may want to limit their budget, however we hope that deals such as these motivate people to go out more.”

Nottingham Women’s Centre is also taking part in Blue Monday by hosting a free Tea and Toast morning between 9:30 and 11:30.
Emily Gill-Howe, fundraising manager, said: “Offering women a space to connect is a priority to Nottingham Women’s Centre and due to our close work with local businesses, for this event we are also excited to welcome along Bird & Blend who will be brewing some delicious, and free, teas for the women throughout the morning.”
It is days like Blue Monday that really showcase how important community is to Nottingham, and that mental health support is there for anyone who needs it, whether that is getting in touch with Nottinghamshire Mind or connecting with others.
