Normally when The Brit nominations arrive people will be talking about the chosen candidates.
However, this year the conversation sparks from who hasn’t been nominated.
When female and male artist categories were scrapped last year, the public hoped this would continue to mean a variety of artists would be nominated.
Despite these hopes, when the nominations were revealed across socials on January 12 the comments quickly became full of anger and confusion due to the lack of women.
“they should reintroduce the categories as it’s undermined all these amazing people.”

With ‘Artist of the Year’ consisting of: Harry Styles, Stormzy, George Ezra, Central Cee and Fred Again.
This isn’t saying that those nominated don’t deserve to be on the list but why should women disappear entirely.
Noah Cousins, who is helping to build a music set for The Brits this year, questioned whether they should reinstate categories because he felt there had been a lack of women voted this year:
“They said this new idea won’t affect it but it obviously has, it’s like I almost think they should reintroduce the categories as it’s undermined all these amazing people.”
A big name that was missing from the list, Little Simz.
Despite her new album ‘No Thank You’, multiple performances and most importantly winning Mercury Prize for album of the year, she wasn’t on the ‘Artist of the Year’ or ‘Best Hip Hop/Grime/Rap Act’ nominations.
Musician Beth Keeping took to Instagram to comment on their socials “The fact that you scrapped gendered artist categories to be more equal and then nominate all men is so disappointing.
“There are so many incredible female artists you could have picked for any of these spots…its the 2023 Brits not 1953.”
Other sections consist of ‘MasterCard album of the year, ‘International song of the year’ and ‘Group of the year’.
Many of the artists nominated have performed in Nottingham in the last year or have gigs planned for the upcoming months.
Just a few of these consist of Loyle Carner, Dua Lipa and Sam Ryder.
The artist with the most nominations this year is Wet Leg and Harry Styles with four nominations across the categories, which is no surprise after both their successes this year with tours and breakthrough albums like ‘Harry’s House’.
Hopefully The Brits will have learnt from this vast mistake and will improve in 2024.
