A Nottingham-based running club has claimed they are just as serious about beer as they are about running.

Brew Cavern, a specialist craft beer store, run the club in partnership with Mikkeler Running Club who accept runners with all levels of ability.

Regular runner Matt Hinton said: “I think people like it because it’s not serious.

“We get a mix of abilities from casual couch to 5km runners, to half marathon regulars and everything in between.

“The fact it’s as much about the beer as the running is probably quite a draw for people, and we take it fairly steady and wait for people to catch up along the way.

“It’s a social meet rather than a serious running club but I think that attracts the serious runners who are also into craft beer so it’s a good mix.”

“I’d heard a few shops & bars around the country had started their own MRC chapters, so we decided to do a Nottingham one. We started it In 2016 and have run pretty much every month since on the first Sunday.”

The clubs busiest meet was 25 runners, and they run ever month.

Members even get a half pint of Mikkeller beer after every run.

The idea itself comes from a wider movement, based off of a Danish running club run by the Mikkeller brewery.

The club’s philosophy is that enjoying a beer while doing physical activity highlights how to create a balance in life.

Hinton, 38, said he had stopped Mikkeller beer from their early days in 2014 and soon heard about the Mikkeller Running Club chapters – before opening their own in 2016.

“I’d heard a few shops & bars around the country had started their own MRC chapters, so we decided to do a Nottingham one. We started it In 2016 and have run pretty much every month since on the first Sunday,” said Hinton.

Runs are usually 4-5kms and begin at the Brew Cavern and finish at a drink at the Kean’s Head.

You can join the club by signing up through their Strava or their Facebook page.

They also host mid-week training runs in Sherwood (Mondays) and West Bridgford (Wednesday)
