The delicious treat was invented on December 8 1893.

On December 8 every year, Nottingham bakeries and bakeries around the world gear up to celebrate the creation of the brownie.

National Brownie Day is the perfect occasion for the whole family to enjoy baking, tasting and simply appreciating one of the nation’s favourite chocolate dessert.

But why do we have a whole day just to honour a simple brownie?

Legend has it that the brownie was created on December 8, 1893 at the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago.

The hotel was owned by socialite Bertha Palmers’ husband, and one day she had requested for the pastry chef to make a dessert that was cake-like and small enough to fit into boxed lunches for the ladies attending the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition.

This was the birth of the brownie and over the hundreds of years since, the dessert has been altered over time – becoming the gooey chocolate cake that we know and love today.

Brownies are a very prominent treat for Nottingham residents due to The Beeston Brownie Company based in Nottinghamshire.

The Beeston Brownie Company is a ‘local family-run business specialising in all things brownie related’.

Ranging from Oreo to Chocolate Orange to Peanut Butter, the company sells a wide range of brownies including gluten-free and vegan options as well as the popular new take on brownies; blondies.

As well as The Beeston Brownie Company there are also many other local bakeries in Nottingham including; The Bakehouse, The DoughMother, Ruby Lou’s Cake Co, and many more.

Whilst visiting these bakeries, enjoying their delicious brownie options make sure to take lots of pictures and tag them on your social media, showing your support for local businesses and hopefully encouraging more people to shop local.

For any vegans wanting to celebrate National Brownie Day but cannot find any suitable options for them in the bakeries, sites like Karissa’s vegan kitchen and Rainbow Plant Life offer some amazing vegan brownie recipes that are easy to make from your very own kitchen.

With National Brownie Day on December 8, make sure you do something to celebrate whether you make your own or enjoy a treat from a local business, just have fun!
