Fushion Hair and Beauty, 2020 winners of the Best Afro Hair Salon in the Midlands, shared their top tips and tricks to look after natural hair this winter with Paula Kioko.

Looking after natural hair is more difficult during winter as the snow falls and temperatures drop. By staying indoors, sheltering ourselves from the cold, we tend to turn up the heating, causing our hair to dry up and strip the natural hair of its texture.

After weighing up the pros and cons of venturing out, you go outside and the cold wind runs through your hair stripping it of any water or moisture, leaving your hair exposed and brittle.

Many people with natural hair suffer from brittle, dry and frizzy hair. Without proper care and routine, you risk more hair breakage. Not only can your hair suffer but your scalp can also be exposed to the risk of extreme flaking.

Nottingham based, Fushion Hair and Beauty Salon specialises in Afro hair and curly textures by providing services ranging from braids, feeding and trims. Here are some of the top tips and tricks that they recommend to survive this winter.

Night care
1. Mix your chosen leave-in conditioner and water in a spray bottle and spray the hair until tangle-free with a wide-tooth comb to easily make two loose plaits (one on either side)
2. Wrap the hair with a satin bonnet or head scarf overnight.
“If at home and not planning on leaving for the day, maintain the plaits, one on either side, as this will prevent the hair from matting, going frizzy and drying out.”
Morning routine
1. Remove plaits and finger comb your hair (it should be easy to do) if not, spray your leave-in conditioner and water mix until you’re happy.
2. Add your hair cream to lock in moisture

3. Add hair Custard/Jelly to define your curls.

“Our central heating can cause the hair to dry out and with these colder months where we need the heating on… If you can refrain from having your hair down if you are just at home, this will help when you come to managing and styling the curls but avoid high tight buns as this will create further tangles.”
