The Tortilla Trend has taken off across TikTok

From the ‘Renegade dance’ challenges to ‘Flip the Switch’ and fashion trends, TikTok has continued connecting their followers with never ending engagement, especially during the many lockdowns we have had to endure; but wait for the trend that will change your meal experiences and tickle your taste buds all at once.

The tortilla hack has taken off across multimedia platforms, with the vast majority of the TikTok population discovering and posting the new life hack alongside their desired fillings, that can be used for any meal of the day.

Swedish TikTok culinary genius, Alexandra Johnson, best known with her 1 million followers account, ‘Simplefood4you’, went viral with the trend. Through her video achieving 6.3 million views today, she has continued to grace our screens with more salivating food options that people have begged her to demonstrate with.

The trend has now reached a massive 3.4 billion views under the name ‘#TortillaTrend’, showing it as a simple and uncomplicated recipe, yet enjoyable for everyone; even the kids can get involved.

The traditional wrap is often used as a lunchtime sandwich; however, this tasty hack can be used across all of three of your mealtimes. Using different foods and treats, you can build your very own ‘breakfast, lunch and dinner’ tortilla recipe book – sounds good to me!

Here is our simple guide to making the tasty snack.

How to make

  1. Get any large tortilla wrap – ‘Mission Deli’ are an accessible example from any supermarket
  2. Using a knife or scissors, cut a slice into the middle section of the wrap.
  3. Place three or four ingredients to fill each quarter section with favourite fillings of your choice.
  4. Going in a clockwise direction, start with the bottom left corner and flip each side over to make a triangular shape – looks similar to a Mexican quesadilla.
  5. Pan fry each side for 60 seconds or use a toastie maker or grill – your choice – to nicely warm your tortilla.
  6. Serve up and enjoy!

Breakfast

To start your day we have fun, healthy-ish, tasty treats to share:

Nutella spread, Banana and Strawberries

 Ingredients:

  • X1 & 1/2 tablespoons of Nutella
  • 1 Tub of strawberries – fresher the better
  • 1 Banana
  • Tortilla Wrap

Method:

  1. Cut a slit into the middle section of tortilla
  2. Spread the Nutella on two quarters of your tortilla
  3. Cut in half around six strawberries and place on one of the quarter sections
  4. Dice your banana and place on the remaining section
  5. Fold Tortilla and pan fry or grill for 60 seconds on each side, until warm
  6. Serve up and enjoy!

    Pancake tortilla wrap

This recipe is the exact same process as making a tortilla but taking it the American way with a pancake.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tub of blueberries/raspberries
  • 1 Tub of strawberries
  • 1 teaspoon or maple syrup for drizzling over after
  • X1 & 1/2 tablespoons of Nutella
  • 1 pancake – make pancake before hand or ‘Abra-ca-Debora sweet Dutch pancakes’ ready-made as an example

Method:

  1. Prepare pancake before hand
  2. Cut a slit into the middle section of pancake
  3. Spread the Nutella on two quarters of your warm pancake
  4. Cut in half around six strawberries and place on one of the quarter sections
  5. Cut in half 6-8 blueberries and place on the remaining section
  6. Fold pancake the same way as tortilla
  7. Serve up and enjoy!

    The All-Day Breakfast Tortilla:

A breakfast wrap all in one!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tortilla Wrap
  • Bacon
  • Hash brown
  • Scrambled Egg
  • Sausages

Method:

  1. Prepare the food that needs to be thoroughly cooked before hand
  2. Cut a slit into the middle section of tortilla
  3. Add slices of bacon onto first section of wrap
  4. Add sausages to next
  5. Add your scrambled egg
  6. Next your hash brown
  7. Add your favourite sauce on top
  8. Fold the tortilla
  9. Pan fry or grill for 60 seconds on each side
  10. Serve warm and enjoy!

Lunch

To get your through the rest of your day, here are some lunchtime recipes, including Alexandra Johnsons delicious favourites

Simplefood4you’s hot mayo, Southern Fried Chicken, Avocado, Tomato, Mozzarella and Bacon

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tortilla Wrap
  • Southern Fried Chicken Sliced or Chicken of your choice
  • Hot mayonnaise or normal
  • Half sliced avocado
  • 1 Sliced Tomato
  • X2 Mozzarella slices
  • 2 Slices of Bacon
  • Quarter of a red onion, sliced

Method:

  1. Prepare the food that needs to be thoroughly cooked before hand
  2. Cut a slit into the middle section of tortilla
  3. Add mozzarella slices onto first section
  4. Then Avocado sliced on next quarter
  5. On top of avocado, add the bacon
  6. Spread on your choice of sauce (hot or ordinary mayonnaise tastes the best)
  7. On top of the sauce add the chicken slices
  8. On the last quarter add tomatoes and onion strips
  9. Fold together the tortilla in clockwise direction
  10. Pan fry or grill for 60 seconds on each side
  11. Serve warm and enjoy!

    Chicken, Pesto, Mozzarella

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tortilla Wrap
  • Chicken Sliced
  • Pesto
  • X2 Mozzarella slices

Method:

  1. Prepare the food that needs to be thoroughly cooked before hand
  2. Cut a slit into the middle section of tortilla
  3. Add mozzarella slices onto first section
  4. Then spread the pesto on to the next two sections
  5. Lastly, add the chicken slices onto last
  6. Fold together the tortilla in clockwise direction
  7. Pan fry or grill for 60 seconds on each side
  8. Serve warm and enjoy!

 Ham or Quorn Vegan smoky ham for vegan and vegetarian option, Lettuce, Mayo, Tomato

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tortilla Wrap
  • Ham slices of your choice – Vegan or vegetarian options
  • Lettuce
  • Mayonnaise
  • Tomato

Method:

  1. Cut a slit into the middle section of tortilla
  2. Add Ham slices onto first section
  3. Then spread the mayonnaise on to the next two sections
  4. Add your lettuce and tomato onto the remaining two quarters
  5. Fold together the tortilla in clockwise direction
  6. Pan fry or grill for 60 seconds on each side
  7. Serve warm and enjoy!

Beef Burger Tortilla

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tortilla Wrap
  • 1 Beef patty
  • Bacon
  • Lettuce
  • Mayonnaise
  • Tomato
  • 1 Cheese slice

Method:

  1. Prepare the food that needs to be thoroughly cooked before hand
  2. Cut a slit into the middle section of tortilla
  3. Add beef patty onto first section, topping with a cheese slice
  4. Spread Mayonnaise onto next section topping with bacon
  5. Add lettuce to the next
  6. Finally, add your tomato slices to final quarter
  7. Fold together the tortilla in clockwise direction
  8. Pan fry or grill for 60 seconds on each side
  9. Serve warm and enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tortilla Wrap
  • Tomato Puree or passata
  • Cheese
  • Spinach
  • Ham slices

Method:

  1. Cut a slit into the middle section of tortilla
  2. Spread the tomato puree or passata across the whole wrap
  3. Add ham slices or whichever topping you would like on top of tomato puree
  4. Sprinkle grated cheese across second and third section
  5. Add spinach to final section
  6. Fold together the tortilla in clockwise direction
  7. Pan fry or grill for 60 seconds on each side
  8. Serve warm and enjoy!
