A pair of newlyweds have become one of the first to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at Mansfield’s new vaccination centre.

Geoff and Jenny Holland, aged 90 and 86 were among the first to be vaccinated at Mansfield’s vaccination centre.

The new vaccination centre joins 31 other sites opening around the country this week.

Mr and Mrs Holland met through Mansfield Council’s independent living scheme for over 55’s and were soon smitten with one another.

Geoff and Jenny became engaged on New Years Eve in 2019 and planned to be married on Jenny’s birthday in April 2020.

Jenny explained: “We had a fight on our hands to get married. We eventually went with the only available date, August 22, with just two witnesses”.

After their wedding, the couple went out for a meal with four guess but were unable to celebrate with music, dancing or sharing their cake with other residents of Town View.

However, the pair are optimistic about the future.

Jenny added: “We’re really excited to be getting the vaccine – hopefully one day soon we’ll be able to have a get-together and celebrate with our family and friends who couldn’t be there on the day”.

During the pandemic, Geoff’s daughter, Kathryn Turner and her husband Roger have only been able to see the couple briefly when they drop off shopping at their front door.

“We have missed them so much’ said Kathryn “They are so in love and such lovely people. It’s fantastic that they are getting the vaccine so their love story can continue”.

Mrs. Turner also credited Jenny with changing her fathers life.

She said: “Meeting Jenny has taken years off him – he looks 20 years younger!”

Mr and Mrs Holland were both eligible for a vaccine as they live within a 45-minute drive from the vaccination centre.

If people cannot or do not want to travel to a vaccination centre, they can be jabbed by a local vaccination site or hospital hub.

There are currently 11 in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

Vaccine appointments are now open to both over 80s and over 75s and appointments can be booked online or by calling 0115 883 4640.
