Jamie Reid’s 64th minute strike gave Mansfield Town a 1-0 win in front of 2,000 returning Cambridge United fans on Wednesday night.
Cambridge fans returned back to Abbey Stadium to see their side’s winless run extended to four games.
Reid was energetic throughout and in a game of many chances, his clinical finish in the second half was crucial.
The victory for Mansfield moves them two points clear of the League Two relegation zone.
Nigel Clough told the Mansfield Chad that results needs to be consistent over the next five months for his side to remain in League Two next season.
“The win gives us a boost and gets us up that table a little bit. We’ve got an awful lot of hard work to do in the next five months, but performances like this give us a template of what we’re looking for away from home.”
Cambridge have started the 20/21 season strongly sitting 4th in the League Two table and created a host of chances throughout the game.
However, Marek Stech could not be beaten in the Mansfield goal producing a number of superb saves to ensure victory for the away side.

The victory sees Mansfield move up to 19th with 14 points from 15 games played and the team have been in impressive form since Clough’s arrival.
The team have won five out of seven games since his arrival on November 6th and Clough told the Chad “this kind of away performance is what we need to build on”.
Crawley Town are up next for Mansfield Town who return to the One Call Stadium this Saturday.
The Sussex-based side sit six places ahead in the League Two standings and most recently drew 1-1 away to Colchester United.
