Saturday 28th saw NTU Women’s basketball team once again leave it late to pull through against Reading Rockets to win 71-66.
Mirroring last week’s win against Southwark, NTU were trailing for most of the first and second quarters, struggling with the intensity of their youthful oponents.
Trent went ahead early through Dutch international Evi Dekker but then the Rocket’s Spanish trio of Sitota Gines Espinosa, Gaila Comesana and Saioa San Francisco, caused problems with a number of effective offensive schemes.
Espinosa was full of energy throughout and showed ability to score from anywhere whilst Comesana and San Francisco were very effective in the pick and roll throughout the first quarter.
In the first half Trent were sloppy in possession – allowing 9 points from turnovers – but were spared somewhat thanks to Reading’s inefficiency.
The third period saw another Trent resurgence (harking back to Saturday 21st) with US guard, Mady Burdett untouchable from midrange and beyond the arc.
Another very efficient showing from Naomi Campbell secured the game in the final period with Vicky Gray converting two late layups to finalise the result.
This continued a great start to the season for NTU who vastly outplayed Southwark last week and have been very freescoring this season.
Captain Vicky Gray and fellow starters Isabel Buerberi and Evi Dekker have been some of the most impressive performers in the competition this season and this shows no signs of letting up.
