A 35-year-old man has been detained on suspicion of assault after an incident which lasted several hours in the city centre.
Officers responded to an incident at Costa coffee on the corner of Friar Lane and Wheeler’s Gate yesterday, February 3 at approximately 12.20pm.
A number of roads were shut down in the city centre and public transport was diverted away from the area.
Police officers entered negotiations with the man inside for several hours.
A crowd of around 100 onlookers gathered on Old Market Square as the events unfolded.
“I’ve never seen anything like this round here, this is normally the sort of thing you only see on the telly,” said one woman who did not want to be named.
Another onlooker said: “It’s crazy how this has happened so suddenly, one minute I’m popping into the library and the next minute I’m walking out and this is all cordoned off.”
One man remarked: “I don’t know why everyone is watching, have they got nothing better to do?”
A two-year-old child was unharmed during the incident but was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Inspector Paul Hennessy of Nottinghamshire Police said: “We would like to thank the public and local businesses for their patience while we were dealing with this incident, which has now come to a safe conclusion.
“I would also like to thank our ambulance and fire service colleagues for their help and cooperation with this coordinated incident.”
