A Nottingham student whose parents reside in China is worried about the coronavirus spreading to areas close to his family.

The virus itself is infecting a large number of people in Wuhan, China and as of 29 January, the authorities in China have acknowledged about 6,000 cases and 132 deaths.

While there have not been any confirmed cases of the virus within the UK as of right now (more than 70 people being tested for the virus all of which have proven negative) it is a serious cause for concern within Nottingham.

In light of this some of the public answered questions on whether the coronavirus is something to be worried about and if they have changed their everyday behaviour in response to the news of the virus spreading.

Will Thiu, aged 20, from Nottingham said:

“Yeah I’m quite worried because of the death toll recently and that it can spread without any symptoms showing and that is pretty wild to me.”

“I wear this surgical mask because I’m very worried and I’ve seen a lot of news in the UK saying that if you wear this mask you could actually avoid contracting the virus.”

He went on to say:

“I wear this surgical mask because I’m very worried and I’ve seen a lot of news in the UK saying that if you wear this mask you could actually avoid contracting the virus.”

In contrast to what Will said, Oscar Usarek, aged 34, from Poland was quite confident that the NHS would be able to deal with the virus if it came to Nottingham:

“I’m not very scared because I think at least in Europe we can put out all of the contingency plans and I suppose because we’ve had a warning somewhat from China we have time to prepare and we are preparing for it now.”

Experts were worried when millions of Chinese travelled home to celebrate Chinese New Year.

But, the festivities were largely cancelled and Wuhan and other Chinese cities are in lockdown.

The virus causes pneumonia. Those who have fallen ill are reported to suffer coughs, fever and, breathing difficulties.
