Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes – these are just some of the artists who have performed at Nottingham’s well-loved live music venue, The Bodega, over the past two decades.

Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, it is known for helping kick-start the careers of many well-known artists of today.

The Bodega is popular for good reason, with its Friday pop confessional club nights, beer garden, and intimate performance setting.

Maddy Chamberlain, 23, from Sneinton Hermitage, production manager at The Bodega, said: “We have a great team here behind the bar who aim to make everyone’s experience here as great as possible, who just love a good chat with regulars which makes it a home away from home for so many.”

Over the past 20 years, The Bodega has expanded considerably, starting out with only seven employees, and now with 80, not including bar staff.

To keep up with its increasing popularity, it has also become a much more safe space than it was before with better security.

“The Bodega, I’ve heard, way back when, was a bit rough. We just want people to have a great time safely,” said Maddy.

Performing at the venue paved the way for many rising musicians, including The xx, The 1975, and Marina and The Diamonds.

“Gig-wise, I think The Bodega holds a special place in many local musicians hearts,” added Maddy. “It’s a place where bands get the opportunity to support amazing artists and gain fans and then eventually play an insane headline show here.”

“The Bodega is unique because almost everyone in Nottingham has been here for some reason or another and got great memories of their times here. Whether they attended a gig 20 years ago, had their 21st birthday at Pop Confessional on a Friday night or just love hanging out in our city centre, fairly lit smoking area, everyone seems to have a connection with The Bodega.”

To celebrate the venue’s birthday, the production team planned an exciting packed weekend of live music. The line-up included:

  • Thursday 28th November – The Orielles + The Working Men’s Club
  • Friday 29th November – Bodega Acoustic Sessions Birthday Special with locals: Remy, Tash Bird, Tori Sheard and Concrete Rose. With D.I.D DJ’s afterwards.
  • Saturday 30th November– Stealing Sheep + Vide0.
  • Sunday 1st December – local day: Kagoule, Sancho Panza, Nactus Kunan, Black Mustard

The Bodega are also selling some merchandise in light of the special occasion, including birthday branded T-shirts and tote bags, which can be bought at the gigs.
