One of Nottingham’s top cinemas has been awarded a huge cash injection to assist with improvements.

Broadway Cinema has received £499,744 in funding from Art Council England for a refurbishment project.

The cinema and cafe bar, located on Hockley’s Broad Street, was awarded the funding as part of the Small Capital programme.

Coinciding with Broadway’s 30th anniversary, the new developments to the building will begin in mid 2020.

“We’re really pleased to be investing in Broadway as it continues to inspire creativity while working to reduce its carbon footprint.”

Broadway CEO Steve Mapp said: “2020 really will be an exciting year for us and for our customers – we are looking forward to show Nottingham what we have planned.”

Part of Broadway’s refurbishment plan includes updating the terrace and foyer with new art installations to make the venue look more appealing to movie-goers.

Additionally, the cinema plans to take the opportunity to become more environmentally sustainable.

Peter Knott, Area Director of Arts Council England, said: “Nottingham has a thriving cultural scene and the city’s history informs its future in a unique and exciting way.”

Broadway previously received funding from the Arts Council in 2006, when it was enlarged to feature two extra screens, including one with decor by Nottingham designer, Paul Smith.

This summer, Broadway spent £400K of its own resources on upgrading to 4K projectors in three of its four movie screens and fitting wider seats, including a new Paul Smith-approved look in screen four.

Broadway is the home of the British Film Institute’s Film Hub Midlands and aims to get people to engage with independent British and world cinema.
