More and more people looking for vegan-friendly options when eating out, ahead of Veganuary, here are some of the best restaurants and cafes in and around Nottingham city centre.
Known previously as No.12 Hounds Gate, No.12 Eldon Chambers is a plant-based eaterie that has won numerous awards including Best Vegetarian and Vegan Restaurant in the East Midlands 2018 and 2019. The restaurant is aiming to revolutionise the way veganism is viewed by creating exciting vegan dishes. The new location will be open from November 12.
Another option, more for light bites and carefully crafted coffees, is Fox Cafe on Pelham Street. This small but cosy cafe provides a warm atmosphere within the busy city centre. As well as providing vegan-friendly cakes and lunches, it is also dog-friendly and the staff are extremely welcoming and accommodating.
An unlikely vegan option is the Pizza Express chain, which has several restaurants in teh city. Known for its dough balls and handmade pizzas, its vegan menu includes many options including vegan dough balls so even those with plant-based diets do not have to miss out! They have ten vegan main meal options as well as many starters and desserts too.
A popular main that stands out is the Vegan Giardiniera that includes vegan mozzarella (an ingredient very few restaurants use) and a romana base that makes the pizza thinner and crispier. You can find Pizza Express on King Street and Goosegate.
Another small alternative cafe to visit is Prickly Pear on Mansfield Road. With a vegan-friendly and affordable menu, they offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. Students can also get 15 per cent off their total bill and you can even get their food delivered straight to your door via JustEat. Their social media accounts are filled with colourful and mouth-watering meals and a bonus is that they’re also dog friendly!
Horn in Hand is a small pub that caters mostly for vegans and vegetarians and is a great place with a bustling atmosphere. It has an intimate outdoor area, a great range of drinks and even Mario Kart to keep you entertained. The menu is vast and includes vegan burgers, breakfasts, buddha bowls and they also use a less common meat substitute, jackfruit. Horn in Hand is situated on Goldsmith Street opposite Nottingham Trent University.
