Exclusives with Hayley Craw and What is Written, two of the artists taking part in the international festival’s 10th year running.

Ready for the festival on Friday 8, the artists came down to the market square to give a taste of what is to come.

Laura Evans, communications and audience development manager, spoke about how the event is different this year: “There are artist from 25 different countries from Asia to Europe to North Africa.”

Hayley Craw is a Canadian performer who is wearing a hair dress to explore the mythology of the fallen woman. She explains her costume in the video below.

“A natural response to my environment, exploring the sites of where I am, it isn’t dancing or acting.”

Hayley is performing in St Mary’s Rest Garden on the first day of the festival where she describes her act as: “A natural response to my environment.”

“They were the first people that supported us and gave us a platform, we are very appreciative that they supported us.”
What is Written, dANCE COMPANY 

Another one to watch out for is What is Written. The dance company are based in Kingsley upon Thames, London and formed when they met at university.

“We decided to carry it on and really work on it to make it something, a business that could live on its own.”

What is Written performing a preview before the event starts

The dance group were at the last UK Young Artist City Takeover and speak highly of the charity which was founded in 2008 due to a lack of representation of UK young artists at international festivals.

“They were the first people that supported us and gave us a platform, we are very appreciative that they supported us.”
