An appeal has been made to find the groundbreaking members of the first Gang Show to include Girl Guides as part of 50th anniversary celebrations.

The Nottinghamshire Gang Show of 1969 was the first ever to combine the Girl Guides and the Scouts for the traditional performance which has previously been open to just boys.

Nottinghamshire’s County Commissioner Jackie Brocklehurst said: “Those first 29 girls were true pioneers and opened the door for so many other young performers.”

Gang Shows are run every two years with this year’s being held at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham in March.

The performance will celebrate the anniversary by displaying images of the 1969 Gang show

Members performing will wear an especially designed necker and a blue Girl Guides scarf which is normally red.

Among the production team for this year’s show is 90-year-old Don Galpin who works with his wife and son to prepare props and has done for 50 years, since the groundbreaking unisex show.

“It’s a really popular show obviously for those people that want to support young people in Nottinghamshire.” – john asplin

This year will also commemorate 101 years since the end of the First World War with the performance’s proceeds being used to raise money for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

The Royal British Legion is also providing visual displays for the show.

Chairman of the Gang Show John Asplin said: “It will be a great show, there are some great numbers [of performers].

“We have a very young production team who have been working very hard since September for the show which will be two-and-a-half-hours of family show and variety.”

The production value of the shows has increased substantially since the 60s’, with the inclusion of more props and technology.

John added: “It’s a really popular show obviously for those people that want to support young people in Nottinghamshire.”

The show is open to the public to buy tickets and will run from Monday 4 until Friday 8 March at 7.15pm each night. A Saturday matinee starts at 2.30pm
