Half century from Nottinghamshire’s Alex Hales helps England to a 2-0 lead in their ODI series against Australia
A strong century partnership between Jonny Bairstow and Hales, who reached 60 and 57 respectively, saw the team beat their rivals from down-under by three wickets in Queensland, despite a nervy start following Jason Roy’s early dismissal for 2-1.
Australia came into the game off the back of their 4-0 ashes victory, but despite Aaron Finch’s century, the Aussies ended on 270-9, with Steve Smith and David Warner only able to add 53 runs between them.
Hales nearly had an early end to his innings with Alex Carey taking off the bails at 91-1, believing he had beaten the Nottinghamshire batsman.
However an umpire review showed Hales to have beaten Carey to the crease, with Hales continuing his run to leave the field with the score on 119-2.
England’s fortunes continued with a healthy input from Joe Root (46) and Jos Buttler (42), with the game finishing 274-6.
