As the transfer window intensifies this month, Nottingham Forest desperately need to strengthen their squad. Here’s who they have been linked with this January.

Adam Clayton

The Middlesbrough central midfielder came through the ranks at Manchester City before signing a permanent deal with Leeds United back in 2010. He’s currently out of favour at Boro and would be an excellent signing to bolster the midfield. He brings a burst of creativity that the Forest midfield currently lack and coupled with the Karanka link with his former club this signing seems a perfect fit.

Niklas Hult

The Swedish full back has recently been linked with a move to England with a reported £270,000 bid submitted to Panathinaikos. There is strong competition from other European sides such as Anderlecht and PAOK for the defenders services but Karanka will certainly be a draw for the Swede. He is a left sided player which is exactly what Forest need, a steady left sided player to solidify that side of the team.

Axel Tuanzebe

The defensive minded player is currently on the fringes at Manchester United but doesn’t look like he’s going to cement his place in the back line any time soon. Karanka also has a strong link with United boss Jose Mourinho, so deals shouldn’t be a problem. He allows the defence to be strengthened but with a deal to Villa believed to be close the manager will have to act quickly.

Ashley Fletcher

Ashley Fletcher signed for Boro in the summer for a reported £7m but has yet to make a real impact in the side. The forward clearly has talent and has previously been on loan at Barnsley, where he helped the team secure promotion to the Championship with a goal in the play off final against Millwall. He then signed for West Ham, scoring his first and only goal against Manchester United in the EFL Cup. The Karanka link could come in to play here and would undoubtedly boost the attacking options.

Patrick Bamford

A return to the City Ground for the forward has been heavily reported online and it would be the perfect signing for the club. Bamford started his career at Forest before moving to Chelsea in 2012 and has been on loan numerous times since. It is believed that the Boro man is keen on a move back to the Midlands, with Karanka reportedly interested in the 24-year-old.
