Darts returns to Nottingham! World number three Peter Wright takes on the seemingly invincible Michael Van Gerwen in the Betway Premier League darts at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham tonight (Thursday, February 9).
“Snakebite” Wright comes into this week’s fixtures on the back of winning two of the three qualifying tournaments for the UK Open over the weekend and claims he’s playing well enough to hand the Dutchman his first defeat in this event since the opening week of last year’s edition.
He said: “I’m very satisfied with how the weekend went and I feel really good, I’ve changed a few things and it’s working.
“Michael’s the guy to beat and it’s up to other players if they want to stop him winning all the trophies.
“He’s still very hard to beat and that’s good because I’m up for it and I want it to be a great match.”
The 46-year-old will have his work cut out in front of a sell-out crowd of 7,000 people, as Van Gerwen has gone an incredible 167 days without losing a match on live television.
He also currently holds every major title on the PDC circuit, including the Premier League and the world championship he won by beating defending champion Gary Anderson in the final.
However, the world number one was unable to get off to a winning start last week, as Anderson held him to a 6-6 draw in a gripping encounter.
Van Gerwen said: “Obviously I want to win every game but I’m not a robot and last week showed that I’m human.
“It’s Peter Wright this week and I always enjoy playing against him, he’s been fantastic and I know I have to perform against him.”
Wright kicked off his 2017 Premier League campaign with a 7-4 win over Jelle Klaasen, who was playing his first match in the event since 2009.
Tonight’s fixtures (7pm start):
Adrian Lewis v Dave Chisnall
