RSPCA workers are appealing for information after five chickens were found abandoned in a small plastic bucket in Bestwood, Nottingham.

The bucket, previously used to contain fence preservative, was found by a passer-by in an alley off Broadwood Road on Friday 3 February with the chickens squeezed into the tiny space and a piece of wood on top.

It is currently unknown who the chickens belonged to or why they were left in such appalling conditions.

RSPCA Inspector Dave McAdam who is investigating said: “They were kept in incredibly cramped conditions and had no access to food and water.

“It is saddening that owners feel the need to abandon animals for whatever reason, and had they not been found they would likely have been attacked by foxes or cats.”

The chickens are now being kept in the care of the RSPCA.
