A fire hit building in Canning Circus is being demolished amid safety concerns.

The fire broke out at 4:30pm yesterday at the disused shop building. As fire fighters tackled the flames the surrounding roads were closed bringing traffic into the city to a standstill.

The roads re-opened during the night, however, from 9.30am this morning the building is being demolished which is causing more lane closures.

Alfreton Road is closed in both directions and police have cordoned off the slip road from Derby Road to Alfreton Road, with traffic delays backing up to Maid Marian Way. Drivers are being advised to avoid the area.

The shop has been empty for several years but the cause of the fire is not yet known.

Investigation work is being carried out by Nottingham Fire and Rescue Service.
