Thousands of viewers were wowed by Nottingham’s EMCA Sweet Ladies cheerleaders and their gymnastics routine which aired live on Blue Peter’s Children in Need special last night.

The Junior Level three squad of 20 11-14-year-olds were asked to appear on the CBBC programme after winning first place at this year’s Future Cheer International Competition in Bournemouth.

Helena Karzycki, EMCA Co-Programme Director and Head Coach of the Sweet Ladies is extremely proud of the girls’ performance.

She said: “It was a once in a life time experience to be on Blue Peter and with it being the Children in Need Spectacular it made the performance even more special.

“It was a live show so the pressure was on, but the girls excelled.”

The cheer team had been preparing for their début for weeks.

It was kept as a surprise for Blue Peter presenter Barney Harwood who was given an unexpected cheer challenge.

Ms Karzycki said: “As it was a surprise, the girls and club weren’t able to let it slip on social media which was a challenge for them!”

The cheer club will be doing their bit for Children in Need by donating £1 for each person who shows up to practice tomorrow kitted out in anything spotty or going for fancy dress.

Cheer mum, Fran Mason, said: “I’m seriously bursting with pride and slightly jealous of my daughter’s Blue Peter badge.

“Massive well done to all of the girls.”
